蒲郡プリンスホテル
常滑のある知多半島から蒲郡に移動。楽しみにしていた蒲郡プリンスホテルに投宿。ちょっとした祝い事を口実にやってきた。
ホテルは、大阪高島屋、千葉佐倉高校校舎、宇治山田駅など身近な建築を残した久野節 (くの みさお)設計のいわゆるクラシックホテルである。創業は昭和9年。
明治・大正・昭和初期といった時代の粋を残すクラシックホテルの宿泊はタイムトラベルの気分もちょっぴり味わえる。
Gamagori Prince Hotel
After Tokoname, my partner and I drove to Gamagori to stay at Gamagori Prince Hotel. It is one of the, what we call, classic hotels, designed by Misao Kuno and opened in 1934. A stay at this kind of hotel takes you back to those good old elegant days for a moment.
左向こうにかすんでいるのは渥美半島 竹島
蒲郡の風景に欠かせない竹島は三河湾に浮かぶ島で内陸と387ｍの橋で結ばれている。安徳天皇の御世1181年創建の八百富神社が祀られている。またその特異な植生のため天然記念物に指定されている。周囲は変化に富んだ水辺の散策路になっているのだが10月始めの台風18号の直撃でダメージがひどく閉鎖されていた。
Takeshima Island
Takeshima is the main specialty of the Gamagori view. It faces the Bay of Mikawa famous for the local lobsters and other sea food. The Island is connected to the inland by the 387m-bridge. On its top is Yaotomi Shirine built in 1181. The Island is designated as National Monument to preserve its unique vegitation. They used to allow visitors to have a walk around on the island's water edge, however, the typhoon No. 18 this year damaged the route bitterly and the route has been closed since then.

長年訪ねたいと思っていた常滑。フランク・ロイド・ライトが帝国ホテル旧館に用いたあのぬくもりのある質感のテラコッタ。そして日常生活の中でお世話になっている急須や湯のみ。
その焼き物の町常滑を折悪しく月曜日に訪ねてしまった。月曜日はどこもかも常滑は休業日。ところが人気のない焼き物の町の散策は思いのほか風情があってその歴史に想いを馳せるにはかえって有難いものだった。
Tokoname is a pottery city about 250 km southwest of Tokyo. Access is much easier and shorter from Nagoya.
I had long wanted to visit the city. Frank Lloyd Wright in his designing of the old Imperial Hotel building used Tokoname terra cotta tiles. As a young girl, I had loved the soft gentle lights through them and huge stone pillars making hideaways in its main lounge. [It was replaced to a preservation site around 70's.]
Tokoname teapots and cups are so popular that each household has at least one or two Tokoname wares. So does mine.
My visit was carelessly on Monday, the day they close all commercial facilities there. But the town lay in a quiet autumn air and I liked it and enjoyed a stroll.

どうしても雲に隠れていない山頂を眺めたくて、今日再び・・・凝りもせず・・・そして・・・望みは叶いました。
My earnest wish to see Mt. Fuji without a cloud cover brought me here, and it was fulfilled.

The great artist was over 80 yrs old when I went to his live house, Fat Tuesdays, NY in 1994.
「レス・ポール94歳で逝去」を告げる今年8月14日の新聞 (9は私の記し間違い)
"Less Paul Passed Away At The Age Of 94, paper dated August 14 this year says.(9/14 is my mistake)
今年はジャズ界にとってはレス・ポール氏の逝去という大きな喪失のあった年で、その日より2ヶ月経った今でも彼を知る人の胸にはいまだに涙が宿っている。
「レス・ポール」はギブソン社のソリッドボディ型エレキギターだと思っている人が多いと思うが、実はこれの生みの親の名前であり、彼自身偉大なジャズ・ミュージシャンである。そしてまた大変な発明家でもあり多重録音を考案実現したことにより発明家の殿堂（＝National Inventors Hall of Fame）入りをしている。
多重録音とは、歌や楽器別にトラックを割り当て、個別に録音して重ねて行く録音方式。個別の調整ができるうえミュージシャンが一堂に会してテイク数を重ねることも不要になった。いわば革命的なレコーディング技術方式を考案しアンペックス社がこれを広めた。（多重録音を客席でデモしてみせるレス）http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foXSXOAfB4U&feature=related
1994年10月3日、私はニューヨークの「ファット・チューズデー」*1にいた。まだレスが｢イリジウム」*2の前に出演していた｢ファット・チューズデー」はその日も世界中からレスを聴きに来た人でいっぱいだった。「It's been a long long time」を弾きながら客席と冗談をかわすレス、トリオメンバーなどそっちのけの様子から一変して演奏に入る、客席の誰かがカメラを向けると演奏中でもそちらにポーズをとるようトリオにもジェスチャーで指示する・・・と鷹揚なものだ。そのうち聴衆はレスの人間味溢れる人柄と素晴らしい演奏に引き込まれて無言になる。一曲が終えると拍手する聴衆の目に涙が宿っているのだ。音楽も人柄もかくも熟した一人の人間の姿に深く感動した私はレスと言葉を交わしたが、別れ際にそれはそれは優しいハグをしてくれた・・・「Thanks for coming, my dear.」・・・今でもそのときのことを思うと涙がにじむほどだ。
これは、私だけでなくレスに触れてのち世界中のあちこちに散っていった人々の多くに共通した思い出だと思う。｢若さ｣だけを尊ぶ日本文化の流れの中で生きていた私はこの日、年齢を重ねることの素晴らしさに目覚めた。燻し銀のように深い輝きを放ち柔軟で優しい心・果てることのない探究心・惜しみなく与える姿勢・・・レスはそういう意味でも素晴らしい人でした・・・
*1 ファット・チューズデー 1980年代から '96にイリジウムに出演するまでレスが定期的に演奏していたライブハウス
*2 イリジウム 現在ブロードウエイの50丁目と51丁目の間にあるライブハウス。毎月曜レスがレギュラー出演していた。
